ITR Filing Due Date Extension Update: 13 September 2025

Introduction

The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline is one of the most critical dates for taxpayers in India. With millions of individuals and businesses required to submit their returns, any change or extension in the due date creates significant buzz. For Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had already provided some relief by extending the deadline for non-audit cases from 31st July 2025 to 15th September 2025. As the new deadline approaches, taxpayers are eagerly waiting for clarity on whether another extension will be granted.

✅ Current Status

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had already extended the ITR filing due date for non-audit cases (such as salaried individuals and small taxpayers) from 31st July 2025 to 15th September 2025.
  • As of 13th September 2025no further official notification has been issued extending this due date.

🔍 Ground Situation

  • Tax professionals, trade associations, and even MPs have requested another extension citing:
    • Technical glitches on the e-filing portal.
    • Delays in form and utility releases.
    • Data mismatches in AISForm 26AS, and TIS.
  • Despite this pressure, the Finance Ministry has not indicated any further extension yet.

⚠️ Risks if You Delay

If you wait expecting an extension that doesn’t come, you may face:

  • Late filing fee (₹1,000 to ₹5,000 under Section 234F).
  • Delayed refunds due to late filing.
  • Loss of certain benefits, such as carrying forward of losses.
  • Higher chances of scrutiny notices.

📌 What Taxpayers Should Do

  • File your ITR by 15th September 2025 to avoid penalties.
  • Keep checking official CBDT and Income Tax Department websites for real-time updates.
  • If an extension comes, you’ll have breathing space — but don’t rely on it until it’s officially notified.
