Meesho Opens Up Platform to Non-GST Sellers

E-commerce marketplace Meesho on Tuesday announced that it is set to welcome non-GST registered sellers to its platform. This will benefit a vast network of small e-commerce businesses across the country.

The decision follows the government’s recent elimination of mandatory Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration for small e-commerce businesses.

Meesho’s CTO Sanjeev Barnwal took to social media X (formerly twitter) to announce the same, adding that it will have a significant impact on the country’s e-commerce landscape.

“A momentous occasion for both Meesho and small businesses in India Today, we proudly mark a historic milestone at Meesho as we extend a warm welcome to non-GST sellers on our platform!” Barnwal said.

“The Government of India’s ground-breaking decision to eliminate mandatory GST registration for small e-commerce businesses signifies a monumental leap towards our ambitious goal of digitizing 10 million sellers by the year 2027,” he added.

The government’s decision, effective from October 1, is in line with the recent announcement by the GST Council, permitting e-commerce platforms to onboard non-GST registered sellers with an annual turnover of up to Rs 40 lakh.

Barnwal said this timely exemption will help Meesho “unlock vast opportunities for millions of resilient SMEs” across the nation and also significantly enhance our product offerings for consumers.

“Our dedication to this transformative journey remains steadfast. We envision an India where every aspiring entrepreneur, irrespective of GST registration, can flourish within the digital realm. Together, we are poised to script a new chapter of empowerment, economic growth, and inclusivity for the nation!” he added.

Meanwhile, Meesho CEO and founder, Vidit Aatrey, commended the government’s responsiveness to the aspirations of artisans, craftsmen, women entrepreneurs, and countless SMEs nationwide.

“We commend the government’s responsiveness to the aspirations of artisans, craftsmen, women entrepreneurs, and countless SMEs nationwide. As India’s only true e-commerce marketplace, we’re poised to foster an Atmanirbhar Bharat and propel our MSMEs into the Digital Age,” Aatrey said.
