Odisha: Assistant Commissioner of CT & GST Arrested by Vigilance for Bribery & Tax Evasion of Rs. 5.85 Lakh

The incident dates back to May 7, when Tripathy intercepted a vehicle in Jajpur Road, Odisha, carrying 22,240 kg of MS scrap worth Rs. 8,89,600 at Ravana in Jajpur.

In a significant development, Vigilance officials arrested Binay Bhusan Tripathy, Assistant Commissioner of CT & GST, Enforcement Unit, Jajpur Road, Odisha along with two associates on charges of bribery, tax evasion, and causing a loss of over Rs. 5.85 lakh to the Odisha state exchequer.

The arrest followed extensive searches conducted across five locations. Tripathy, along with Jyoti Pattnaik and Md Golam Sad, was implicated in the illegal activities. Pattnaik falsely claimed ownership of goods, while Golam Sad, a scrap dealer, received the misappropriated goods.

The incident dates back to May 7, when Tripathy intercepted a vehicle in Jajpur Road, Odisha, carrying 22,240 kg of MS scrap worth Rs. 8,89,600 at Ravana in Jajpur. Instead of following the proper legal procedures, he detained the vehicle at a dhaba on the National Highway and demanded a bribe of Rs. 2.5 lakh from the owner for its release. When the bribe was not paid, Tripathy unlawfully sold the scrap to another dealer, violating GST regulations. He then collected the applicable tax but embezzled Rs. 5,85,356 of the total amount.

Further investigations revealed that Tripathy had been depositing the bribe money into various bank accounts belonging to his family members and later converting those funds into fixed deposits. One of these accounts was opened in the name of his father, Madhab Tripathy, who claimed to have no knowledge of the transactions. Vigilance officials have seized bank passbooks from the assistant commissioner as evidence.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Vigilance authorities to crack down on corruption and tax evasion, ensuring that those who misuse their positions of power are held accountable.
