DGGI Has Detected Cases where Individuals with Malicious Intention Issuing Fake Summons

CBIC Warns Taxpayers about Fake Summons: In a recent development, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a cautionary advisory regarding the emergence of fraudulent activities related to fake GST summons. The CBIC urges taxpayers to exercise vigilance and verify the authenticity of any communication purportedly coming from GST authorities.

According to the statement released by CBIC, the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has detected instances where individuals with malicious intent are fabricating and dispatching counterfeit summons to taxpayers, regardless of whether they are actually under investigation by the DGGI.

Despite bearing a Document Identification Number (DIN), these fake summons lack legitimacy as they have not been issued by the DGGI. To combat this growing concern, the DGGI is actively pursuing legal measures, including lodging complaints with law enforcement agencies against those responsible for orchestrating such deceptive practices.

To ascertain the genuineness of any communication, including summons, taxpayers are encouraged to utilize the ‘VERIFY CBIC-DIN’ tool available on the CBIC’s official website or the DIN Utility Search feature on the online portal of the Directorate of Data Management (DDM), CBIC.

In cases where taxpayers receive suspicious or potentially fraudulent summons from DGGI/CBIC entities, prompt reporting to the respective jurisdictional DGGI/CBIC office is advised. This proactive measure enables authorities to verify the authenticity of the communication and take necessary action against individuals involved in perpetrating fraudulent activities.

In conclusion, taxpayers are reminded to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of any communication purportedly originating from GST authorities. By remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious activities, taxpayers can contribute to safeguarding themselves and the integrity of the GST system against fraudulent practices.
