Introduction of Two-Factor Authentication in GST for enhanced Log-in Security – GSTN Advisory 618

GST Advisory 618: In a recent development, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has issued Advisory No. 618 dated December 1, 2023, notifying taxpayers about a crucial update aimed at enhancing the security of log-in procedures on the GST portal. The advisory highlights the implementation of a two-factor authentication system, emphasizing the importance of bolstering security measures for user access. Taxpayers are strongly advised to thoroughly review the information provided by the GSTN in the aforementioned advisory.

This move signifies a proactive step by the GSTN to fortify the overall cybersecurity framework associated with the GST portal, ensuring a more robust and secure login experience for all users. The incorporation of two-factor authentication aligns with industry best practices, underscoring the commitment to safeguarding sensitive taxpayer data and preventing unauthorized access. It is imperative for taxpayers to familiarize themselves with the specifics outlined in the advisory to adapt to and comply with the updated authentication process effectively.

The initial pilot rollout in Haryana has proven successful, ensuring a seamless user experience. The Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) protocol is slated for the first-phase rollout in Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Delhi, with subsequent plans for nationwide implementation in the second phase.

Under this new authentication system, taxpayers will be required to input their user ID and password, followed by a one-time password (OTP) that will be sent to their Primary Authorized Signatory’s mobile number and email address. To facilitate a smooth transition to this enhanced security measure, taxpayers are urged to maintain updated contact information for their authorized signatories on the GST Portal. The OTP will only be asked when there is a change in the taxpayer’s system (desktop or laptop or browser) or location.

This progressive solution is scheduled for rollout starting from December 1, 2023.

The initiative reflects GSTN’s commitment to fortifying the GST portal’s login security, aligning with industry best practices. Taxpayers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with this update and ensure compliance to safeguard their sensitive data effectively. Stay informed, stay secure, and embrace the future of GST portal access with enhanced two-factor authentication.
